Mounts should be things that give alternate skills and ways of play, like Siege Devourers and Junundu, not the means of getting to places.
Since GW2 will have 'up and down', maybe we could need to fly in some places, sometimes with skills, sometimes with mounts.

/winthread.
i would go with /notsigned, mostly because GW2 is already bordering on the "ZOMGWOWCOPYCAT" level of gameplay decisions, we dont need another wow rip-off.
and just for the hell of it...

Mounts are not just for map traveling. It can be used for ranger as a pet itself.
For example you can either make it a seperated pet who fight along side with you or make it a mount which give you some speed boost but make you attack slower / cast spell slower.
For those who say it's just a copy of WoW: Game becomes better if the developer knows how to use other games's good features. There is nothing wrong with it. Gamers play some certain games based on certain feature it has. As long as the mojority of gamers like that feature, developer will make profit from making it happen which they will.
Btw, mount for traveling, no sorry.
Mount as something special and/or for showing off (like FoW armor, Mini panda and such.) Yes. It's like minipet, do nothing but something cute/fun in the game.
Mount as some special ability (as talked above) Yes. Though need lots of works on this in order to balance out the game.

I forgot about GW z-axis... That very well makes (useless) flying mounts an option though.
Unless outposts were crazy huge, and required you to have increased speed / fly to get through it, I think mounts should be for Battle purposes only.
Maybe make a selection of skins ,but that doesnt effect stats (like roller beatles. the colour and skin you got didnt affect how fast you went). All these skins would be similarely priced, OR like 5k and 15k armour system. 1 elite skin, for each normal skin. There would be like "Mount Trainers" , to prevent what happened with the mini pets.

If there's mounts in GW2, then that most likely means there's no map travel, which most likely means I'm not buying GW2.
I hate fully/mostly-instanced MMORPGs

umm, no it doesnt. As stated by several other people, when you see "Mounts", you think for traveling purposes only.
~ Mounts could be anything from "status items" usable only in Outposts.
~ Cosmetic (they dont change your armour, attacks, speed etc. just for looks). Only differents from above is, instead of winning these, they function like armour sets (auto customized, and purchased from a trader). With or without "15k" versions of their "normal" version.
~ Battle purposes (for specific places in Pve ie: seige wurm, seige devourer, etc).
~ Seige purposes in PvP
~ Specific to certain profession (like a ranger simply getting on its pet)
~ etc.
do you see that mounts are not just for travelling purposes?

Ok, ok, pull toghether yourselves.
There are ALREADY mounts in GW:
http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Junundu
http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Siege_Devourer
http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Summit_Giant_Herder
http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Dolyak_Master
http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Stone_Summit_Arcanist
Are they for traveling around? No, they just are 'forms' or 'disguises' they change the whole set of skills.
That is the only possible example of mounts we can find in GW and the only that would work.
Area-dependent creatures you can 'mount' to play as another creature.
Wouldn't be nice to be able to mount a Dolyak after killing the Dolyak rider like we already do with Siege Devourers?
Since in GW there will be 'up and down' unlike GW, maybe there could be some areas where you need to reach a floating stone.
Then you can use things like the Kurzick Wallow wheel-powered cable way or a flying mount.
Imagine to ride a dragon:
- Talk to dragon.
- Mount.
- Now in 'dragon rider' from.
- Skills changes to dragon rider build: Firebreath, etc...
- Movement type changes now to 'flying creature' and you can use the jump and crouch buttons to move up and down.
Bu then, if you leave the areas where that dragon is allowed, or map away, you lose it, like with the Siege Devourer.

With the Junundu and Seige Devourers, we already have the "mounts for fighting" people are demanding already in game. Yet people aren't happy with that and continue to demand more. Why? Because the real reason you want them is for travelling. If you say it isn't, then why are you insisting on adding something that already exists to the game?

So long as mounts don't replace map travel or give a grind-based competitive advantage, I'm all for them. Increasing the number of yaks and bears in a game is never a bad decision.

Mounts would be good and bad for the players.
Good for pose value faster movement and possibly special attacks.
Bad because the enemy would have them too.
If I can have a skeletal mount for my necro then im all for it.
